Supreme Court Orders Rajasthan to Pave Way for Rajasthani Language in Schools

Jaipur | The Supreme Court has paved the way for Rajasthani language to be taught in the state’s schools and colleges, directing the Rajasthan government to formulate a comprehensive policy for its introduction across all educational institutions in a gradual, phased approach.

The court firmly acknowledged that Rajasthani is far more than a mere dialect — it is a language carrying centuries of historical, literary, and cultural significance. A division bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta issued the directive while hearing a Special Leave Petition filed by Padma Mehta and others, instructing the state to chart a clear roadmap for integrating Rajasthani at the primary, secondary, and higher education levels. The government has been given until September 30 to submit a progress report.

Government Cites Ongoing Efforts

The state government, represented by Additional Advocate General Shivmangal Sharma, informed the court that efforts are already underway. Under the National Education Policy 2020, dedicated task forces have been established to advance mother tongue-based education and regional language instruction, with pilot testing being carried out in a phased manner across the statement.
