Rahul Gandhi to Appear in Court Over Modi Surname Comment

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to appear before an MP/MLA court in Patna on April 12

regarding a petition filed by the former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi in 2019. Modi had filed a petition against Gandhi’s comment on the ‘Modi surname.’

A Gujarat court convicted Rahul Gandhi last month for statements he made during the Congress’ election campaign in Kolar in 2019. Purnesh Modi, a BJP MLA from Gujarat, filed the case, accusing Gandhi of humiliating the entire Modi community with his remarks in Kolar. Purnesh Modi claimed in his complaint that Gandhi said, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

Rahul Gandhi was convicted under Section 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for “intentionally insulting with the intent to disturb peace.” As a result, he lost his Lok Sabha seat and was asked to leave his government bungalow. Gandhi has written a letter to the deputy secretary of the Lok Sabha secretariat, stating that he will follow the terms of the notice.

Unless a higher court overturns his sentence, Rahul Gandhi will be disqualified from voting for the next eight years. He is set to appear before the Gujarat District and Sessions Court on April 13 for his bail application hearing in the case, and on May 3, he will appear in court again to determine if the charges against him are sustainable.

Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi has accused Rahul Gandhi of insulting the backward classes with his remarks on the ‘Modi surname’, and threatened that the Congress will face repercussions in the upcoming elections.Despite the disqualification, Rahul Gandhi remains defiant, telling a press conference that his tapasya is to work for the people and that he doesn’t care if he is permanently disqualified or imprisoned.
