Rajasthan Enforces Strict Social Media Rules for Lawyers; Violations May Lead to Disciplinary Action

The Bar Council of Rajasthan has directed all bar associations across the state to strictly implement the Social Media Code of Conduct issued by the Bar Council of India for advocates. Lawyers found violating these guidelines may face disciplinary proceedings under the Advocates Act, 1961.
Under the new rules, advocates are prohibited from creating reels, memes, or short videos using court premises, lawyers’ attire, or judicial symbols. The use of professional identity for personal branding, publicity, or increasing social media followers has also been barred.
The code further prohibits lawyers from posting misleading or fabricated content, including AI-generated fake images, deepfakes, and voice-cloned material. Recording, broadcasting, or sharing court proceedings, hearings, and case records without proper authorization is strictly forbidden.
In a significant step, compliance with the Social Media Code of Conduct has been made mandatory for aspiring lawyers as well. Students seeking admission to law colleges, interns, and individuals applying for enrolment as advocates will now be required to submit an affidavit affirming their adherence to these guidelines.
