Surya Kant on Friday made strong remarks while hearing a petition filed by a lawyer seeking the designation of “Senior Advocate.” During the hearing, the Chief Justice criticized individuals entering the legal profession with allegedly fake or forged degrees and compared such elements to “cockroaches” who attack institutions and the system.
The bench questioned the petitioner’s conduct and the language used on social media, observing that the designation of Senior Advocate is an honour conferred by the court and not something to be aggressively pursued. The court also remarked that the status should not be treated as a mere “status symbol.”
The bench further expressed concern over the authenticity of law degrees held by some people wearing black robes and said there were serious doubts regarding fake qualifications in the profession.
On Saturday, Surya Kant issued a clarification over the controversy surrounding his “cockroach” remark. He said a section of the media had misrepresented his oral observations and clarified that the comments were not directed at unemployed youth. According to the Chief Justice, the remarks were specifically aimed at individuals who enter prestigious professions, including law and media, using fake or forged degrees.
