A surprising case reached the Supreme Court involving Aruna Kumari, a Bihar-based woman officer accused of accepting a ₹10,000 bribe. During the hearing, it was claimed that the seized currency notes had been “destroyed by rats,” a submission that drew sharp attention from the court.
Aruna Kumari, who served as a Child Development Programme Officer in 2014, was booked on corruption charges. The trial court later acquitted her. However, the Patna High Court reversed the acquittal and sentenced her to four years’ imprisonment, observing that although the bribe money was not produced in court, records showed it had been deposited in the treasury, and therefore the prosecution case remained intact.
A Supreme Court bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Vishwanathan questioned this reasoning, noting that the explanation regarding the missing notes did not appear credible. The court has, for now, granted bail to Aruna Kumari.h
