CM Shinde Reaffirms Maharashtra’s Dedication to Maratha Community Reservation
MUMBAI: On Sunday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde urged Maratha reservation activists not to resort to self-harm. CM Shinde reiterated his government’s unwavering support for the Maratha community and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring Maratha reservations, emphasizing that it is the government’s duty to provide such reservation.
CM Shinde affirms Maratha Community
“I assure you that I will maintain my dedication to the Maratha community by refraining from making false or misleading statements.I won’t make any deceptive pledges,” affirmed CM Shinde. Shinde also noted that with the Supreme Court accepting the state government’s curative petition on Maratha reservation, a significant opportunity for reservation has emerged for the Maratha community.
“As a member of the Maratha community and the son of a farmer, I possess a deep well of empathy. My heart goes out to the families of the young individuals who tragically took their own lives. We have lost two young members of the Maratha community to suicide. I urge our youth to consider the impact on their families before resorting to such extreme measures. Ensuring Maratha community reservation is our government’s duty, and we are diligently progressing toward that goal,” CM Shinde expressed.
“Under Devendra Fadnavis’s leadership as Chief Minister, reservations for the Maratha community were instituted and successfully upheld in the High Court. However, they faced challenges in the Supreme Court due to shortcomings in presenting crucial information. I won’t dwell on the past intricacies, but the court identified certain gaps, primarily related to demonstrating the backwardness of the Maratha community. However, there’s now a significant reason for optimism as our curative petition has been accepted by the Supreme Court on October 13, and it is scheduled for further consideration. This development is reassuring for the Maratha community, as it provides an opportunity to present the previously unavailable evidence regarding their backwardness. A substantial avenue for reservation has opened up, and we are in consultation with esteemed legal experts. We remain hopeful,” conveyed CM Shinde.
He also mentioned that the state government has established a committee to grant Kunbi certificates to Maratha community members residing in Marathwada, particularly to those who possess historical records.
“We have established the Justice Shinde committee, and they are diligently addressing this matter. They have conducted a thorough examination and amassed substantial evidence, including over 5,000 to 6,000 old records and documents. It is our duty to provide reservation to the Maratha community, and I want to reiterate my commitment to honesty and transparency. The entire government stands in solidarity with the community, and I implore the youth not to resort to extreme measures,” stated CM Shinde.
In September, the state government established the Shinde committee to determine the procedure for issuing Kunbi certificates to community members. Chaired by retired Justice Sandeep Shinde, the committee comprises the additional chief secretary of the revenue department, the principal secretary of the law and judiciary department, the divisional commissioner of Aurangabad, and collectors from districts in central Maharashtra.
“The opposition is currently engaged and appears concerned about the actions we are taking. During the tenure of the MahaVikas Aghadi (MVA), Maratha reservation faced legal challenges in the Supreme Court, although it was upheld in the High Court during Devendra Fadnavis’s term as Chief Minister. I’d prefer not to politicize this matter. Instead, I urge the opposition to provide constructive input and avoid political polarization. It’s worth noting that Maratha reservation was invalidated during the MVA’s rule, but we are committed to fulfilling all the demands of the Maratha community,” stated CM Shinde.
