Cyber criminals are now using fake Android update messages as a weapon to steal people’s hard-earned money. Fraudsters are sending links that appear to be official mobile updates. The moment a user clicks the link, malicious software gets installed, giving scammers access to the phone. They then withdraw money from bank accounts, often through UPI. People with limited English skills are especially vulnerable because the messages closely resemble those sent by genuine mobile companies.
Fraud in the name of 5G network activation
An elderly man in Sanganer received a call claiming his phone needed to be upgraded from 4G to 5G. The caller sent a link for the update. As soon as he clicked it, fraudsters gained access to his phone and withdrew money using UPI.
Account emptied before complaint
Another victim, Anuj, who had recently purchased a new smartphone, said he received an automatic update link on March 11, 2026. After clicking it, ₹99,000 was withdrawn from his account in three transactions—₹45,000, ₹36,000, and ₹18,000. By the time he lodged a complaint, only ₹15 remained in his account.

“Important: Your Android system update is available! Install now (link).”
Scam using battery optimization link
A woman in Malviya Nagar received a WhatsApp message claiming that installing a battery optimization update would improve her phone’s performance. After installing the app, her data was stolen and purchases were made using her credit card.
Expert advice: How to avoid such frauds
Cyber Crime Branch DIG Shantanu Kumar advised users to avoid clicking unknown links received on mobile phones. Mobile companies never send update links via messages. Updates should always be installed through Settings > System Update. He also warned that fraudsters often send messages in English so users click “OK” or “Allow” without understanding. If a message is unclear, seek help from someone knowledgeable. If the phone suddenly locks or shows signs of remote access, immediately turn off the internet.
