Rising Dowry Death Cases Spark Nationwide Concern
A series of recent dowry death cases reported across India has once again highlighted the continuing menace of dowry harassment and violence against women. From Madhya Pradesh to Karnataka, families have accused husbands and in-laws of mental and physical torture linked to dowry demands, leading to public outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of the law.
Twisha Sharma Case: Bhopal Under Scrutiny
One of the most discussed recent cases is the death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Twisha, a former Miss Pune contestant, was found dead at her in-laws’ residence shortly after her marriage. Her family alleged that she was subjected to repeated harassment and abuse over dowry demands.
The case drew widespread attention after suspicious circumstances surrounding her death emerged. Police later formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. Reports also stated that her husband went absconding during the investigation, intensifying public concern. Deepika Nagar Case Shocks Greater Noida
Another tragic case surfaced from Greater Noida, where 24-year-old Deepika Nagar died after allegedly falling from a third-floor terrace only 18 months after her marriage. Her family accused her husband and in-laws of demanding ₹50 lakh, gold, and a SUV as dowry.
According to reports, the autopsy revealed severe internal injuries, including a ruptured spleen and brain clot. Police arrested Deepika’s husband and father-in-law following the allegations. The incident sparked anger on social media, with many demanding fast-track justice in dowry-related crimes.
Karnataka Woman Dies Amid Harassment Allegations
In Ballari district of Karnataka, a 24-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after facing repeated harassment and torture from her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. Police registered a dowry death case and launched an investigation into the allegations made by the victim’s family.
The case once again highlighted how dowry-related violence continues to affect women across urban and rural India alike.
Dowry Death Law in India
Dowry death is treated as a serious criminal offense under Indian law. Section 80 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (earlier IPC Section 304B) applies when a woman dies under unnatural circumstances within seven years of marriage and evidence shows she faced dowry-related cruelty or harassment shortly before her death.
Despite strict legal provisions, dowry-related violence remains a major social issue. Activists and legal experts continue to call for stronger implementation of laws, quicker investigations, and greater societal awareness to end the practice of dowry permanently.
