SC to Centre: Rethink Abortion Deadline for Minor Rape Victims

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday urged the Central Government to consider amending the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act to remove the legal gestational limit in cases where a minor girl becomes pregnant due to rape.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was hearing a review petition filed by AIIMS Delhi. The petition challenged an earlier order permitting the termination of a 30-week pregnancy of a 15-year-old rape survivor.
The Court declined to entertain the hospital’s plea, emphasizing that a medical institution cannot impose its decision on the minor. It observed that the ultimate choice—whether to continue the pregnancy or terminate it—rests with the girl herself.
